Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn at Massachusetts. The parents of her were Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Her father's death in the role of a carnival barker when Ruth was just a little girl She was required to provide for the family by working as a maid and server. Ruth was a student and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. Following only two school years the young woman left to pursue the acting career. Her journey was not without obstacles. her chosen career path. In New York she was hired to take photos in a crime magazine, but no theatrical opportunities were offered. She then worked as an hat-checker at a night club before calling the shots and moving back to Boston. In Boston, she worked to make enough money with her ushering duties during the day while in the evening, she performed in the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. Drama studies led her to graduate in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
